How to apply to our online Post-Bacc Certificate – School Nursing

Review our streamlined admission process for this online Graduate Certificate program. Requirements for the School Nurse Certificate online program include:


  • Complete the online application and submit this waiver code: MUGRADONLINE
  • Official transcript(s) from all previous colleges or universities attended
  • Active RN license in Pennsylvania or in the state where clinical practice or internship is to be arranged
  • BS or BA or BSN from an accredited program (CCNE, CNEA or ACEN)
  • Bachelor's degree grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
    • When GPA is below this, provisional acceptance may be considered if you demonstrate graduate study potential by other means
  • Two professional letters of recommendation; one must be from a supervisor
  • Statement of intent (include why you’re interested, why you think you would succeed in the program and what you plan to do with the degree in the future)
  • Minimum of one year of clinical experience in nursing, but two years is preferred
    • Waived for graduates of the Millersville University BSN program
  • Interview with nursing program coordinator
    • MU will establish two times each week when interviews will be held. Once you are notified that your application is complete, you will be provided a link to schedule a 20-minute interview. An admission decision will be made immediately following the interview.
    • MU assumes all materials will be submitted at least one week in advance of the interview, allowing the University to make an immediate decision afterward. Interviews can be scheduled with incomplete applications, but the admission decision will be delayed until all outstanding materials are submitted.

  • Current resume, including all clinical experience to date
  • Copy of your RN license, including state where licensure is held, RN number and expiration date
  • Copy of CPR Card from PA Department of Education approved list of CPR programs
  • Copy of Act 34 Child Abuse Clearance
  • Copy of Act 151 Criminal History Check
  • Copy of Act 114 FBI Fingerprinting (www.identogo.com PDE option)

Students in the School Nurse Certificate online program must complete the following four courses for a total of 12 credit hours.

This course focuses on the school nurse's role in promotion of health in individuals and the school community with an emphasis on vulnerable populations. The integration of evidence-based practice and epidemiological approaches to promote consistent and equitable care for individuals and diverse populations in school communities is explored.

This course focuses on the legal mandates of school nursing and how these laws affect the certified school nurse. There is an emphasis on the special health needs of children in the school setting and the nurse's role in identifying health and health education related accommodations and adaptations for diverse learners in order to support student health and promote optimal learning.

In this course, the focus is on the role of the school nurse in caring for students in grades PK-4. There is an emphasis on the nursing process as it is applied to the school age population while considering acute, chronic, and episodic illness and the overall healthcare needs of the PK-4 grade school population including those with special health needs, disabilities, diverse cultures, and English Language Learners. The physical, emotional, psychosocial, and developmental needs of the PK-4 grade population are explored. Interprofessional collaboration within the school nurse role in the elementary school setting is examined. This course provides 50 of the required 100 hours of practicum experience focusing on the PK-4 grade population under the guidance of a certified school nurse.

In this course, the focus is on the role of the school nurse in caring for students in grades 5-12. There is an emphasis on the nursing process as it is applied to the school age population while considering acute, chronic, and episodic illness and the overall healthcare needs of the 5-12 grade school population including those with special health needs, disabilities, diverse cultures, and English Language Learners. The physical, emotional, psychosocial, and developmental needs of the 5-12 grade age population are explored. Interprofessional collaboration within the school nurse role in the middle and high school setting is examined. This course provides 50 of the required 100 hours of practicum experience focusing on the 5-12 grade population under the guidance of a certified school nurse.
